Cascadia Medical Director talks sleep on national TV
Cascadia Health Medical Director Dr. Andrea Matsumura was featured on national TV on Jan. 8.
Dr. Matsumura joined the program Live with Kelly and Mark to talk about sleep and its importance in a long, healthy life.
Live with Kelly and Mark is a syndicated morning talk show hosted by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, broadcast by stations throughout the United States. Matsumura was invited to the show after being featured on various podcast series as a sleep expert.
The roughly 8-minute segment highlighted the role sleep plays on overall health.
“When we sleep, this is when we are resetting for the next day, so our heart, our lungs, they get to rest. Our immune system strengthens, our hormones reset and then, most importantly, we are cleaning all the waste products out of our brain,” Dr. Matsumura said.
This cleaning by the glymphatic system is core to health and longevity. And—oppositely—chronic lack of sleep can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, dementia, and cancer, she explained.
“There’s a lot of evidence out there that says we need 7-9 hours of sleep, but really it’s about consistency and quality,” Dr. Matsumura explained.
Dr. Matsumura also gave an overview of the four sleep stages, from light sleep and a transitional phase to deep sleep and REM sleep. All are part of the body’s nightly recharging for the next day.
Sleep tips from Dr. Matsumura:
- Consistency: Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time.
- Environment: Sleep in a cool, dark, quiet, room.
