Building a Whole Community, for Today and Tomorrow

Cascadia Health has been a cornerstone in the Portland community for more than 40 years. Today, we serve over 17,000 individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity, addiction, mental health challenges, and trauma. We’re proud to have over 800 units of supported housing for people with mental health challenges. Your gift to Cascadia, through your will or living trust, directly support the essential services we provide to Oregon families.

What Your Planned Gift Means to Us

Cascadia is on a long journey towards providing integrated care for our clients. Our integrated health care approach aims to support clients through any challenge they are facing, and to help them on their path to recovery.

Now, more than ever, your support of Cascadia is vital to helping us fulfill our mission: to provide mental health services, addiction recovery support, primary care, wellness programs, permanent housing solutions and affordable housing to people of all ages.

What Planned Giving Means for You

Planned giving is what you provide now for a future gift to Cascadia Health by including a bequest provision in your will or revocable trust. It can be tailored to complement your financial goals and support families in need. It is the simplest way to make a significant gift to Cascadia without affecting your assets during your lifetime. You can also specify for what purposes the gift can be used.

If you decide to include a gift for Cascadia in a bequest intention, please notify us so that we can thank you and make sure that we have a clear understanding of your plans. Your notification will be treated confidentially if you so desire. Please contact your attorney if you are considering this type of gift.

Types of Planned Giving Gifts

Name Cascadia Health in your will or life insurance policy.

Naming Cascadia in your will or life insurance policy is a meaningful way to show your support for the work we do in the community.

When you name Cascadia your will, you can choose to bequeath a monetary sum or a percentage of your estate and take a 100% estate tax deduction. If you would like to add Cascadia to your current will or life insurance policy, you may sign a provision, a codicil, or trust amendment that states your wishes.  You may also gift your fully-paid life insurance policy or make Cascadia the beneficiary of an existing policy. Another option is to take out a new policy with Cascadia as the owner and beneficiary.

Designate Cascadia as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement plan.

Many retirement plans include the option to bequeath your retirement plan assets to nonprofit organizations such as Cascadia. Such assets are then free of estate and income tax, which means more of your gift goes directly to support Cascadia.

If you are 72 or older, you can make a tax-free distribution from your traditional or Roth IRA to Cascadia up to $100,000 without incurring income tax on your withdrawal.

Charitable trusts are individual trusts that are generally funded with cash or appreciated property or stock.

Charitable Lead trusts pay income to Cascadia for a number of years (or a lifetime) and then transfers the remaining assets in the trust back to you or to another individual of your choice. Charitable lead trusts are not tax-exempt trusts, meaning they are subject to the same income and estate tax laws as other non-exempt trusts.

Charitable Remainder Unitrusts distribute a variable amount either for a set term of years or for the lifetimes of the beneficiaries. Income can be distributed as a fixed percentage of trusts’ s annual value or the net income of the trust. Cascadia then received the remainder of the trust assets after the term of the trust ends.

Advantages income:

  • Annual income for yourself and/or other beneficiaries
  • A partial income tax charitable deduction in the year the trust is funded
  • Not immediately incurring capital gains tax on appreciated long-term assets
  • Freedom from the burden of managing the property you put in the trust

Donate stocks or mutual funds.

Donating stocks or mutual funds to Cascadia is a smart and simple way to help. By making a gift of appreciated securities, you may be able to avoid capital tax gains, diversity your portfolio, and/or secure a stream of income.

Securities you use to make your gift must be held by you for more than one year in order to be fully deductible.

Donate residential, commercial, or undeveloped real estate.

Cascadia will sell the property and use the proceeds to support vital programs. In very limited cases, we may use the property for our own purposes.
