For immediate release, Portland, Oregon

Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare announced today that it has raised $2.8 million in charitable gifts toward its $3.5 million Building a Culture of Caring philanthropic campaign in support of the redevelopment of the Garlington Center in NE Portland into a new integrated health clinic. The new clinic will provide the community with onsite mental health, addiction support, primary care and wellness services all in one location to address a person’s whole health needs. Construction on the clinic is currently underway with plans to open the Garlington Center in April 2018.

Fundamental to the Building a Culture of Caring campaign was a recent grant from the Collins Foundation, which awarded $125,000 in support of Cascadia’s capital redevelopment efforts, which totals $14 million.

“Cascadia’s approach of aligning integrated healthcare services with affordable housing has the potential to become a national model. The Collins Foundation is proud to invest in their efforts to ensure all Portlanders enjoy access to quality care,” said Cynthia Addams, CEO of The Collins Foundation.

Cascadia is now in the public phase of its 2-year Building a Culture of Caring campaign with efforts focused on raising the remaining  $690,000 in gifts from the community by the Center’s April 2018 opening. Along with the support of the Collins Foundation, many foundations, organizations, and individuals have joined in supporting Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare’s new Garlington Health Center. Major gifts include $155,000 anonymous gift, $35,000 matching challenge grant from the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, $30,000 from the Clark Foundation, $10,000 from the Randall D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust and $5,000 from The Holzman Foundation. With additional recent individual gifts from individuals totaling $200,000, to date, Cascadia has raised $2.8 million toward its $3.5 million goal.

“Growing community support for Cascadia’s vision for the Garlington campus is proof of the community’s commitment to alleviating Portland’s pressing need for accessible and affordable health and housing. The generosity of our region’s leading major foundations including The Collins Foundation, M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Meyer Memorial Trust and The Oregon Community Foundation have inspired and furthered incredible support and generosity from the community,” said Deniz Tasdemir Conger, Senior Director of Philanthropy for Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare.

The Garlington Health Center will anchor one of Oregon’s most innovative community-centered campuses—a place where healing, homes and hope come together. The campus will also be home to Garlington Place, a new 52-unit affordable housing apartment building, providing Veterans and displaced North/NE Portland community members’ access to affordable housing in NE Portland.

Dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Oregonians, Cascadia has embarked on the capital redevelopment of its Garlington Center clinic located in NE Portland, a 1.5-acre site. The redevelopment will establish a new center for integrated mental health, addiction treatment, primary care, wellness programs and services including a pharmacy for community members. Building a Culture of Caring is Cascadia’s $3.5 million philanthropic campaign to establish the new Garlington Health & Wellness Center.

Cascadia’s redevelopment plans of the site also includes Garlington Place, a new 4-story, 52-unit apartment building – offering affordable housing for Cascadia clients, veterans and displaced North and NE Portland community members. This new campus is located in the Eliot Neighborhood – in the heart of the historic Albina district at 3034 NE Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard in Portland. The center is named in honor of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Garlington, Jr., a prominent leader and advocate for the African American community in Portland during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

As of April 1, 2017, Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC) and part of a national two-year demonstration project to measure the benefits of expanding the integration of mental, substance use and physical health care. Cascadia’s three CCBHC clinics in Portland will expand this federal designation of services and serve as models for an innovative approach to mental health that treats each patient holistically, leading to improved mental and physical health, lower catastrophic care costs, and reduced stigma surrounding mental health and substance use. This project places Oregon in the national spotlight for health care reform. Oregon was one of just eight states chosen to participate in the two-year program, and Cascadia is one of only 13 organizations selected statewide.
