ART GALLERY
Meet artists and makers who are part of our community and breaking down barriers.
This installation marked a really important lesson for me. It has tested the limits of my ability and has made me acutely aware of the ‘limitations’ of my body. I’ve pushed myself too hard in the past and have been made radically aware of that by my body. But unfortunately, as it is with so many other disabled people, I felt so pressured by people, society, school, and capitalism to believe that I was an inconvenience and burden on everybody in my life. And I tried tirelessly to do everything on my own, tried to be the nicest, most understanding human possible, and never ask for help unless it was offered. I focused too much on security and safety in my life and wasn’t listening to what my body was screaming at me to do- do the things that make you happy and cared for, and trust that. I’m focusing solely on the things I love- my art, research, supporting others, and making people feel seen, heard, and appreciated.
Disability justice starts with being honest about the many, many challenges that we are faced with from society. And this is my way of doing it!

“Floored”
While in that dark place the woman has some level of relief, as the person drawn is supported by the floor, at rest. She is stationary, when emotions have an easy path in being drawn out, when it is easier to listen to the mind’s thoughts. This is a sacred look into someone that is vulnerable and exposed, literally with nakedness and with raw emotion. It’s an emotion we cover up and have a perceived need to withhold, that of deep despair. There is freedom in experiencing our pain, so that we may heal forward.
This drawing depicts a time of despair and some relief; the person drawn is supported by the floor, she is stationary and at rest. In the silence with face downcast, there is presence–the woman is present to herself, and there is space for her pain.
We all need to be loved and accepted as we are. No one is perfect but we all have something to offer. Keeping your heart opened to your own needs and those of others can be a change maker in your life and that of the recipient of your love. Love and respect for nature can be a change maker in your life. We all deserve the best!
An open heart influenced by nature brings contentment. Mixed media collage with acrylic paint, printed papers, stencils and rubber stamps.

I drew this piece shortly after being approved for my hysterectomy for Adenomyosis. I was 21 years old and fighting pain so severe it was causing me to alter multitudes of future paths I had envisioned. Symptoms were ever-returning; I profoundly accepted the reality of lack of control of the failing body. Every second of every day had become fighting to stay afloat and keep going.
In this self portrait, I am directing the power of the sun (healing, fire, and life) towards an unrelenting battle with physical disease
