Thomas Insel, MD, Director of NIMH makes a very interesting case for the obstacles we create by insisting we use the label “behavioral disorder” instead of calling it what these disabilities really are: brain disorders. “We wait until we see a behavioral problem that represents a symptom and only then do we intervene, when in fact the brain/neurological circuitries were maladapted well before behavior symptoms become noticeable.” He predicts that in due time, we can predict well in advance of the behavioral symptoms that there is a brain illness or disability of sorts.
