Recognizing a Month of Recovery

National Recovery Month recognizes the courage and strength of community members who triumphed over addiction and mental health challenges. Mental health and substance use disorders (SUD) are often stigmatized, misunderstood, and overlooked. However, underneath it all are people, and we honor their efforts and resilience.

One of the bravest things someone can do is to ask for help, and this month provides an opportunity to shine a light on the challenges that many communities face.

“Five summers ago, I was so committed to my addiction I tried to give up on the good things in my life to stay in my ways,” says Cat, a Cascadia client. “Three summers ago, I tried to quit on my own, quietly. I relapsed about six months in. Two summers ago, I checked myself into outpatient treatment. I learned coping skills and dug down into the things I had buried. Cascadia Health saved my life. I got my life back. It was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I’ve ever done.” Like Cat, you can get help and begin your recovery.

Cascadia Health recognizes that recovery is achievable. To that end, we have prioritized recovery through integrated approaches to care. Cascadia offers alcohol and drug outpatient services for adults and youth, including individual therapy with professional counselors helping to cope with past trauma, education on the effects of substances, relapse prevention, and building effective relationships. We also offer DUII education, diversion, and conviction services to aid in completing requirements.

By commemorating National Recovery Month, we affirm that together, we can help those in need achieve recovery. Let’s come together as a community to celebrate success stories, help those on their journey to recovery and renew our commitment to a future where every individual has the support, treatment and resources to lead whole and healthy lives. As a whole community we can help open paths and lend a helping hand. To help break the stigma and show solidarity, take part in community events this September, including Oregon Recover’s Walk for Recovery (join Team Cascadia!). You can also share resources and learn more about SUD, mental health, and recovery at FindSupport.gov.

If you or anyone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. To learn how to get support for mental health, drug, and alcohol issues, visit FindSupport.gov.
